Understanding Worldviews About the Future of the Communications Industry

Whitepaper Overview


The Communications Technology Roadmap project provides the opportunity to understand not just the potential evolutionary paths of the industry but also how firms develop their views and ultimately make strategic decisions for investment in these uncertain technologies. Based on a series of 75 interviews with individuals in organizations across the entire communications value chain, we demonstrate that different individuals and firms see the world in different ways. Their frames of reference filter the information about technologies and market trends, determine what data they find credible, and ultimately shape their answers about the trajectory that the industry will follow in the future. This whitepaper highlights differences in frames of the future of photonics and suggests the kinds of effects these different frames might have on strategic choices firms make.
